SUMMARY:"Quantifying Casting Quality Through Filling Conditions"
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nAFS Twin Cities Chapter welcomes Randy Oehrlein\, VP of
Engineering at Carley Foundry Inc\, to the monthly meeting on Tuesday Jan
uary 9th\, 2019 at the Green Mill in Plymouth\, Minnesota with the Social
beginning at 3:00pm. Randy's presentation on "Quantifying Casting Quality
Through Filling Conditions" will begin at 4:15pm.\n\nAbout the Speaker...
Randy Oehrlein has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the U of M and an
AA from the Saint Paul Technical College in Design Technology. He current
ly serves on the AFS 2E Permanent Mold Committee\, AFS 2D Structural Casti
ngs Committee\, AFS Casting Congress technical papers review\, and in addi
tion reviews technical papers for the International Journal of Metal Casti
ng. He has participated in AFS sponsored research as both an investigator
and steering committee member along with serving on the AFS Research Board
for 5 years. Randy has given presentations for the AFS Casting Congress o
r specialty conferences for molten metal transfer\, semi permanent mold te
chnology\, thermal management of permanent molds\, and energy reduction in
a jobbing foundry. Randy also serves as an instructor for the AFS permane
nt mold courses and contributed to the AFS aluminum casting in-house train
ing material and online courses. Randy contributed chapters to\, and facil
itated the completion of the AFS Handbook of Permanent Mold Casting Techno
logy as well as a contributor to AFS Aluminum Casting Technology Handbook
and Casting Defect Handbook. He is the recipient of the 2007 AFS Glen Stah
l Service Award recipient\, the 2009 William Frishmuth Aluminum Foundryman
of the Year award\, and the 2014 AFS Scientific Merit Award.\n\nAbout the
Topic... Randy will present findings on a recent AFS research project whe
re multiple foundries produced the same castings to the same process\, alt
hough using three distinctly different gating systems. The castings were a
lso poured in four different alloys. The castings were then inspected for
quality with X-ray\, Liquid Penetrant Testing\, pressure tightness\, compu
ted tomography scanning\, fracture analysis along with mechanical property
testing. The results were surprising in many cases and may change how we
think about the relation of gating systems and part quality.\nSchedule...\
