 h the Minnesota Chapter of ASM International\, is hosting "Demystifying th
 e Casting Conversion" virtually on Wednesday\, November 17th\, 2021!\n\n\n
 \nAbout the Speaker:\n\nJeremy Lipshaw is the Product Development Engineer
  at Applied Process where he promotes light-weighting and cost-reduction v
 ia austempered and casting conversion solutions. He graduated from the Uni
 versity of Michigan with a Bachelors in Materials Science and Engineering 
 in 2017 and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering in 2018. In addition to hi
 s studies\, Jeremy worked at and eventually managed Joyworks Studio\, a pr
 ototype foundry specializing in castings education and ductile iron resear
 ch. After graduation\, he transitioned into his current role at Applied Pr
 ocess. Jeremy serves as the vice chair of the ductile iron society researc
 h committee and has been a member of AFS and ASM for over 5 years where he
  brings a unique generational perspective on the issues and opportunities 
 within the industry.\n\nAbout the Topic:\n\nFor those untrained in casting
  technologies\, converting from a fabrication to a casting may seem like a
  daunting task. Fabrications such as weldments\, stampings\, and forgings 
 typically allow for intuitive\, additive-based designs and tend to use cla
 ssical materials. Castings\, on the other hand\, require a separate set of
  skills that are generally not taught to designers and may have unique mat
 erial properties that prevent the use of popular material selection shortc
 uts. However\, with the proper design optimization and material selection 
 techniques\, converting an existing fabrication to a casting can provide a
  lightweight\, low-cost\, and sustainable alternative. This presentation w
 ill discuss how to identify casting conversion candidates\, how to interpr
 et material selection indices\, and how to design an optimized casting.\n\
